Looking Forward: Films of 2014

Films are starting to get less interesting for me anymore. The lack of being able to interact with the story in any meaningful way makes the medium less compelling to start with. Not to mention the fact I still can’t fathom how their budgets get so ridiculous in comparison to games, which have MUCH MORE work to do in comparison. That said, while film is becoming less relevant to me, I still enjoy watching them now and again. Unlike my top ten games I’m looking forward to in 2014, this list had a much smaller pool to work with because there aren’t as many that look as good.

#10 – Amazing Spiderman 2
  - I can talk all day about how I think this movie will be shit. And… yeah, I think it’ll be shit for a large amount of reasons. But if there’s one thing I like outside of seeing a surprisingly good movie, it’s seeing an absolute train wreck of a movie. In short, I’m not expecting anything positive from this film and, if anything, I just want to see it crash and burn. Don’t get me wrong, I love Spiderman and I’d love to see a good Spiderman movie again. But while it’s still in the hands of Sony, I have little faith I’ll ever get to see those days again. I’m not saying Marvel is filled with wizards that make every movie great, but they at least know how to make them fun. Amazing Spiderman was not fun and I’m not expecting much more from Amazing Spiderman 2.

#09 – The Lego Movie
 - There are a lot of reasons why this movie looks fun, but also nonsensical. A movie all about Legos and Lego characters in some big epic adventure doesn’t sound compelling on paper. But the delivery, if the trailers are any indication, looks great and I’d like to see this movie pull it off. Having no Pixar or straight Disney films on this list (due to a lack of information on either of those) this is going up as my animated film for the list. Enjoy.

#08 – Need for Speed - Need for Speed shouldn’t be here, or even on my radar. I never played the games. I don’t like the Fast & Furious movies. And there’s only really one reason I have a vested interest in this. Aaron Paul is playing the main role for this film. You might know him better as Jesse Pinkmin of Breaking Bad fame, which is awesome. I know he’s a talented actor who can play a convincing role. The reason I’m excited for this is because we can finally see him break out into a role outside of Breaking Bad and see if there really is talent there or if he just got luck with that role. Fingers-crossed this won’t be the last we see of Aaron Paul.

#07 – X-Men: Days of Future Past
 - This would have been higher had this movie not come in with so much baggage. This is a sequel to the genuinely good X-Men: First Class and The Wolverine. This is also the sequel to X3: X-Men United and its horrid cousin, Wolverine Origins. In short, there are a lot of things this movie is tied to and a lot of things that could easily get cocked up here in terms of structuring a good continuity from this film going forward with the franchise. But it will have sentinels and some of the original cast back. So all is looking interesting, but I can’t say if anything is in the green yet or not. We’ll just have to wait until May to find out.

#06 – Nurse 3D
 - I wouldn’t have even known of this movie had I not been shown the trailer by MovieBob (shout out to him). Horror films, unlike horror games, are something I actually tend to finish because I am not fearing for my own life like I am in the games. On top of that, I have never been one to walk out of a film (though tempted a few times). Nurse 3D looks to be an interesting suspenseful horror flick involving obsession, murder, stalking, sexy nurses, and some other dark shit that should be interesting to see unfold. Whether or not it works will have to wait. If not, the best part of horror films when they’re not scary is that they become atrociously hysterical.

#05 – Godzilla
 - Godzilla is a property I’ve had mixed opinions about. It’s kind of cool, but is presented in bad ways at times. That said, it’s a giant dinosaur-like monster (kaiju) attacking buildings and other monsters for whatever reason. That’s enough to keep me hooked. Add that you have Bryan Cranston as one of your actors and call it done. I’ll see this knowing he’s got a role in the picture.

#04 – Noah - I’ve been meaning to do a post on religion for a long time. Not so much to clarify my religious beliefs to people who would judgment me, but simply to discuss the concepts religion brings to the table. That said, I’m not one who particularly likes the Bible for the name it has built up for itself as a holy symbol of some nature. To me, it’s just a book with stories to teach people moral lessons and that’s all there is to it. As such, Noah takes a page from that book, literally, and it’s about the obvious Noah’s Arc story. The reason I emphasize the “literal” part is because the original bible was violent, had sexual content, and really dark themes to it (or so I’ve read) and it seems to be aiming for that kind of concept. I’m looking forward to seeing how those of the very traditionalist sense of Christianity will respond to this. Either way, it looks great thus far and I’m looking forward to seeing the final product.

#03 – Maleficent - Color me skeptical for the plan that Disney is enacting where they will start making live-action versions of all their 2D animated properties they did a long time ago. It’s not that I expect these films to be bad, but that I find the project somewhat unnecessary. You already made great renditions of classic literature and I see little reason to go back and make more off the same property. That said, production for Sleeping Beauty’s remake, Maleficent, looks great and I can’t wait to see more. Fingers-crossed this does well so we can maybe get a live-action Aladdin or straight up Arabian Knights tale.

#02 – Captain America: Winter Soldier
 - This was originally my number one film for 2014’s most anticipated list. It’s Captain America but in modern times utilizing one of the best storylines from the comic in which [spoiler] becomes The Winter Soldier, Captain America’s Russian counter-part. There’s a lot to like here from the original storyline, but those who haven’t read it or seen the animated series may want to avoid reading articles like this for fear of spoilers. The trailer gives a James Bond/Jason Bourne vibe, which is probably the right direction to take a hero like Captain America. This is going to be exciting. But there’s only one movie I’m more interested in checking out…

#01 –  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - If you had told me in 2011 that I’d love Rise of the Apes as much as I ended up loving, I would have called you crazy. The original Planet of the Apes concept was one that never really interested me. And this being a “prequel” to that just made me less interested. But enough people twisted my arm into checking it out and it was worth it. That ended up being my movie of the year, I think (unless that was SuckerPunch). Better acting and CGI than I expected for a film with such a bizarrely dumb concept. If they bring the same level of work they did in 2011 to this film, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

That’s all for 2014’s film list. Special mention to Guardians of the Galaxy. It would have made the list IF we had more than just concept art to work with. See ya next time and enjoy the new year.
